Dear Mayor Savage and Councillors:
On behalf of the Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS), we are calling on Regional Council to vote no on the proposed amendment of the HRM Centre Plan which would allow the construction of two 30 story towers as part of the Lawen Carlton Block development.
The consideration of this request by HRM Council sets a dangerous precedent.
The Carlton Block holds tremendous value as a unique historic area and holds historic designations from all three levels of government. In fact, the language defining the historic value of the area notes it as a rare, early Victorian streetscape. Alternative solutions have been proposed around increasing housing density and affordability, that can help build capacity while still protecting our built heritage.
From a tourism perspective, heritage and culture impact the quality of communities for Nova Scotia residents and are significant travel motivators for visitors.
TIANS urges HRM Council to vote against the proposed amendment.
Sincerely,
Wes Surrett
