February 22, 2023 – (Halifax, NS) – The Tourism Industry Association of Nova Scotia (TIANS) applauds the decision by Regional Council to establish more stringent controls on Short-Term Rentals in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
TIANS has been advocating on this issue for years and is pleased to see the action taken by Nova Scotia’s largest municipality. In addition to the tourism industry impacts, Short-Term Rentals have had a significant effect on housing supply, affordability and community character. This decision by Halifax Regional Council demonstrates leadership for residents of HRM and the Nova Scotia Tourism economy.
“There are a number of issues that have arisen as a result of the unregulated growth of Short-Term Rentals, says TIANS President, Darlene Grant Fiander, “and the social impact on communities related to available housing is a significant one.”
It is expected the new policy will be in effect as of September 1, 2023 and we anticipate an immediate positive impact for legitimate accommodation operators and access to housing.
Working with partner associations and stakeholders, TIANS is committed to representing the best interests of the Industry; enhancing and supporting the development of a competitive business environment; advocating on issues critical to the Industry’s success; and most importantly, leading Nova Scotia’s most promising economic sector.
